Each year as the famous Syttende Mai Run/Walk comes and goes I tell myself, "I'll run it next year."
Then, like a lot of people, I sign up for one of the Madison Marathon events. It's nice to see the Madison Marathon start to get its feet underneath itself but in recent years the marathon events it seem to have affected the Syttende Mai, a 20-mile run from Madison to Stoughton. Not this year.
A quick search of the results shows the 20-mile race had 625 finishers in 2002. Last year's race had 325 finishers. This year, the race seemed to really benefit from adding a 10-mile distance, which helped Syttende Mai get a combined 594 finishers in the 10-mile and 20-mile races. This is great news for the race. Like a lot of Madison runners, I want to see the Syttende Mai continue forever because one of these years I really am going to run it.
In addition to the Syttende Mai getting a second wind, the Madison Marathon, which takes place May 30, is also reporting really good registration numbers. According to it's Web site, most of the events are almost full (the half marathon is at 97 percent capacity).
Keep it up Madison-area runners!
